7 Solid Reasons To Use Reusable Menstrual Products

The use of reusable sanitary pads for ladies, over the use of disposable ones, is a subject matter worth the trouble of writing. For many years, reusables was the order of the day for many women before the advent of disposable sanitary pads. In fact, a lot of women are beginning to seek for better methods than using sanitary pads. On average, a woman will use up to 16,800 disposable pads and tampons during her lifetime.

Women, and even the world at large, need to be educated on this subject matter as it would save our resources, our environment and our women’s health. A shift towards the use of reusable menstrual products would be a shift towards a healthier, cleaner and more money-friendly world.

Below are 7 reasons why reusables are better than disposables:

1. It Decreases the Chances of Having Infections

Disposables are known to contain plastics, chemical gels, artificial fragrances and adhesives, which are very dangerous to the body. Imagine using such a material for hours, days or even weeks, the vagina could suffer for it. Disposables are made up of super-absorbent synthetic fibres that have the tendency to absorb moisture from the vagina, block air from flowing into the vagina, and consequently increase the risk of irritation, rashes and even infections. On the other hand, reusables like cloth pads, purely organic cotton products and menstrual cups, are better, healthier alternatives.

2. It is Quite Economical

You’d be amazed at how much a fortune you’d have spent within a space of 40 years by the time we do the math. It is true that reusables are costly; but then, they can be used for even up to 6 years, so you don’t have to bother about the cost of getting a new one within those years. It is often said that ‘little drops of water make a mighty ocean;’ such is the case of disposables.

Let’s assume a woman menstruates for 40 years, buys an $8 pack of disposables every month, she would have spent a total of $3,840 during her lifetime. A set of reusables for the same period, at an estimated cost of $80, and replaced every five years, will sum up to only $640.

3. It is Environment Friendly

The way we do things everyday always affect our immediate environment. In North America, it is estimated that about 20 billion menstrual pads are discarded each year. Can you imagine how much harm this can bring to our environment, considering that the plastics in a pad will take hundreds of years to decompose.

Also, like many other manufacturing processes, the manufacture of disposables also pollutes our waterways, air and animal habitats. Reusables on the other hand, though may possess qualities like the disposables, do not get disposed often. Hence, a shift to reusables will indeed be a switch to a safer environment.

4. It is Sanitary and Easy to Clean

A lot of women feel insecure about reusables because they are skeptical it may leak. No! No! That can’t happen! Cloth pads are designed to absorb all forms of menstrual release from the vagina, which can guarantee the user freedom of movements and activities. They are also very easy to clean. You can soak them in warm water overnight, and add a little ‘hydrogen peroxide’ solution, or you can just leave it to your washing machine to do the job well.

5. Improvement of Independent Industry

Many industries are already involved in the production of these reusables, and their consistency in producing these reusables is hinged on how well they are patronized. You could just take some time out to Google search “cloth pads,” and you’d get enough information about the industries that are involved in its production.

Some of them are: Lunapads, GladRags, Sckoon, Divacup, Mooncup, The Keeper etc. Local Artisanars also are involved in the production too. If we purchase from them well enough, we’d encourage them to give their best.

6. Reusables are Healthier to Use

As I have earlier stated in number 1 of this article, disposables are made of Chemicals, adhesives, cotton (usually treated with pesticides) and so on; and when a woman uses them, these chemicals can escape into her body and cause some really bad health conditions like allergic reactions, reproduction and gynecological complications.

7. It Comes in an Attractive and Colourful Design

Reusables also come in attractive mind blowing colours and designs, unlike the disposables which have a display of ‘boring’ white colour. You can never get bored using reusables, “trust me.”

It has been said that women tend to feel inferior because of their menstrual cycle. Using reusables would really help build confidence in women because they can now have a more reliable, healthy, cheap and convenient means of taking care of their menstrual health — reusable menstrual products.
